"Wiki Wiki" means fast and comes from the Hawaiian language. Just as fast, publishing companies have to respond to the reader's changed information demands. Fast and up-to-date but also uncomplicated is how the user wants to obtain the information. Wikipedia, the internet encyclopaedia, is a successful example for this. Internet-based Wiki communication platforms offer ultimate topicality. Printed information cannot always live up to these expectations. An ideal solution for joining the advantages of books with the up-to-dateness of the internet is the combination of both worlds. The first publishing company that accepted the challenge in Finland is "Shildts Förlags Ab" in Helsinki. The task was to transfer the "Uppslagsverket Finland" – a special encyclopaedia for history and culture of the Swedish-speaking population in Finland – into the Wiki solution." "Schildts Förlag" trusts in the advisory skills of Salymedia The Salymedia consulting team of Salymedia has realised the project on schedule within two months. More than three thousand pages with 15,000 articles of the five-volume encyclopaedia were highly automatedly transferred into the modern "Wiki" application "Uppslagsverket 2.0". This contained texts, pictures, graphics, captions as well as references to texts and pictures. The handling of this application is very simple. Within only three days of training, the editors of Schildts were proficient in using the new system. In order to ensure a high editorial quality, a small editorial team was formed. A scientific editorial board supports the team in its work. Uppslagsverket 2.0 is effectively protected against misuse and data loss by a comprehensive security concept. www.uvf.fi Achievements for "Uppslagsverket 2.0" (UVF 2.0) •Strategic advice • Conception and project management • Choice of Wiki system • Layout – design • Analysis and conversion of print data • Setting up a test and training system on Salymedia's server • Development of a tutorial • Instructing the editors • Choice of internet provider • Transferring the "UVF 2.0" target system onto the server of the internet provider Additional fields of application for Wikis: • Professional information • Corporate communication • Knowledge management • Loose-leaf publications • Platform for project management • Documentations for service, development and research • Varied cooperation platforms • Quality management • FAQ techniques |
